The garlic product is known to have significant benefits for cardiovascular health. Garlic supplementation has been shown to reduce aortic plaque deposits in cholesterol-fed rabbits, and garlic extract has been found to inhibit vascular calcification in human patients with high blood cholesterol. The vasodilative effect of garlic is believed to be caused by the catabolism of garlic-derived polysulfides to hydrogen sulfide in red blood cells, a reaction that depends on reduced thiols in or on the RBC membrane. Hydrogen sulfide is an endogenous cardioprotective vascular cell-signalling molecule.
