Aloe vera is a cactus-like plant that thrives in hot, dry environments. Aloe vera is used both topically (on the skin) and orally. Acne, lichen planus (an extremely irritating rash on the skin or in the mouth), oral submucous fibrosis, burning mouth syndrome, burns, and radiation-induced skin damage all benefit from topical aloe. Weight loss, diabetes, hepatitis, and inflammatory bowel disease (a collection of illnesses induced by gut inflammation that includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) are all promoted by taking aloe orally.
